Everyone who WASN'T at Cefalos last night missed an awesome evening of music! It was a really intimate show...more like having Tom and the guys in your living room, playing just for you. Got some cool pics that I just might be able to get off my phone and into my laptop.

I haven't had a chance to listen to "When We Shine" yet, but it's a priority for the day. The new stuff Tom played last night was great.

So, thanks Tom & American Son for kicking off my weekend in grand style.

Forgive me for using this forum for personal memoirs outside of the music realm but...

For those of you who don't know, I came from more of a football family than a music family, and I have not missed a Steeler home game since 1991. Since I just returned from a family reunion in West Virginia to watch the Steeler pre-season game tonight, I thought I'd share with you my five most memorable Steeler games in the last 17 years (minus of course the Super Bowl and all the AFC Championship games during the Cowher era).

5. Steelers vs. Panthers a few days before Christmas, probably the year before Three Rivers closed. In the second quarter an unexpected, fierce storm filled the stadium with snow turning the place upside down, someone returned an interception for 90 yards, I left my coat at home and bought a sweatshirt at the new giftshop at Gate C to keep warm. Just plain fun...(a close second for #5 was a game against the Houston Oilers in '92 - Al Del Greco is still waiting for Cowher to call that time-out to ice him before a 35 yard field goal attempt.)

4. Steelers vs. Bears at Heinz Field '05. First win in the streak that didn't end until JB announced his retirement with the Lombardi Trophy in hand on Detroit turf. Of course it snowed and JB knocked Erlacher on his rear end twice inside the 10.

3.Steelers vs. Titans, whatever year Tennessee went to the Super Bowl - Three Rivers Stadium. Bobby Shaw scored and lifted his jersey to show that he was indeed Super Man, the crowd shouted for Pete Gonzales all day because we stunk and everyone was looking for a savior, I drank Penn Pilsner Dark from Gate A concessions all day and sat on the thirty yard line in box seats because it was the last game of the season in a dismal year (try that at Heinz Field). After Cowher ran JB four times in a row from the three yard line, I watched the Titans defense taunt them after each play before taking over on downs, I pointed to my buddy Matt and said, "That team is going to the Super Bowl."

2.Steelers vs. Patriots Heinz Field. I think it was 2004. We ended the Patriots 18 game win streak on Halloween night. I spent six hours in the Edgar Thompson Works #3 blast furnace with my friend Z that morning and was never more proud to be a Steeler fan when I arrived for the 4pm start. The 60 yard Rothelsburger pass to Burress was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a football stadium. It became an NFL commercial by the end of the season.

1.Steelers vs. Browns - twice, Three Rivers. I don't know what year it was but in the nineties the Steelers beat the Browns for the division title and home field advantage two weeks before the first playoff game in the rivalry's long history. There are too many memories from those two games to write about (can you say Yancy Thigpen?), but I never enjoyed the game of football any more than I did in those 14 days. Remember that coach from Cleveland? Some hot shot by the name of Bill Bilichek. I still remember the king size velvet Christmas card hanging over the Gate C walkway - "Hey Cleveland, Season's Beatings"

Where ya been? Unbroken Circle. Listened and(ing) to continuously. Best record since Time Out of Mind! Inspiration. Enjoy your life.

Message from Tom:
Hey Fred and Anita,
Great to hear from you! I'm sorry I haven't been your way in awhile. Pittsburgh ain't too far away - try to catch a show up here sometime if you can. Chances are it'll be a little better listening opportunity. There were nights in Washington when only you and a handful of others were listening. I haven't forgotten that - it means a lot to me. Take care and I hope to see you soon. Time Out of Mind??? Now that's a complement!
Your friend,
Tom

Java Jo's Coffee Bar, Berlin, OH; 08/01/08
Tom returns to this Amish village coffee shop for a non-stop 2+ hour set of songs and stories. Book-ended by cover songs was a 24-song set that reached way back into the past and also included a couple of brand new tunes. Slow, bluesy songs occasionally were nudged aside for delicately fingerpicked ballads which then gave way to firey acoustic rockers. Set list as follows:
Nowhere Road
Dance With Who Brought You
Clear County Road
Steeltown Blues
Saving Grace
Goodbye Town
The Breaker
Union Miner
Nightshift Blues
Float Me On Down This River
This Town
I Don't Know What Took So Long
Balladeer's Son
Hearts of Fire
Of Course
Until It Falls Away
Out in the Cold
Gary's '55
You Don't Want to Lose Her
One Way Ticket
Thunder Road
It Ain't Easy Being Me
What I Wouldn't Do
Highway Junkie
Another awesome evening of music; always worth the drive! It was nice seeing Janet and Jack, too.

JavaJo's Coffee Bar, Berlin, OH 06/07/08: Tom was in prime storyteller mode Saturday night in this small Amish village in eastern Ohio, educating and entertaining us with tales of the plight of the West Virginia coal miners, the inspiration for his excellent, nationally praised CD "The Unbroken Circle." He dug deep into his vast well of songs for his two hour set that included a couple from "Guitar & Pen Vol.1," two brand new ones and a cover tune. Set list:
Night Shift Blues
Float Me On Down This River
The Breaker
Jessie William's Boy (new)
Clear County Rd (new)
Gary's '55
Goodbye Town
My Old Man & Me
The Longest Darkest Day
The Bull Moose Special
Union Miner
The House We Call Home
Obituary of Joe Fry
What I Wouldn't Do (Thanks, Tom)
This Ain't California
Manifold Road
One Way Ticket (Thanks, again)
It Ain't Easy Being Me
Awesome night of stories and songs. My friends that accompanied me are new fans! PS. Check out the glowing review of "The Unbroken Circle" in the June/July issue of the national publication "Dirty Linen."

Message from Tom:
Dian,
It was great to meet you in San Francisco. My California trip was simply unbelievable and I'm glad I had the great night in North Beach at Giordano Bros.
Stay in touch and I can't wait to get back to land of sun, redwoods, whales, seals, lizards, canyons, mountains, and great night clubs! Dare I forget palm trees, the unbelievable coastline and Pacific Ocean?
Take care and enjoy paradise...
Tom

Hi, Tom!

I stumbled on the Amerison Highway Tour site this morning while goofin' off at work. I really love the concept! Definitely brought back some old memories of my family roadtrip adventures. Can't wait to hear your stories from the road.

Take care!

Linda

Message from Tom:
Thanks Linda. I'm looking forward to getting The AmeriSon Highway Tours "on the road" so to speak. Stay posted.

One of my favorite TB and AS shows ever. I wish I had written down all the rarities. High energy and attentive (although non dancing) crowd really helped. Can't wait to see you guys again soon.
